Capturing a self-build journal on film

On behalf of its housebuilder client CB Homes, the team at Zebra Marketing and Communications has been working with Knew Productions to produce a video of a self-build experience, covering the entire process of building a new house from scratch. Knew Productions has captured on film the experiences of a couple who have been building their own beautiful home in the heart of leafy Cheshire for the past few months.

 

Maggie Austen, Senior Account Manager at Zebra explained: “We wanted to cover the journey of a self-builder from digging the foundations to actually moving into their completed dream home. We knew video would be the best medium to tell this type of story and we needed a videographer who could partner with us and complete the filming over a period of several months.” 

 

 

Every step of the way

Experienced camera operators from Knew Productions visited the construction site on five occasions, from when it seemed to be a sea of mud in the darkest days of winter to when the finishing touches were being put on the final paintwork. Each visit to the busy building site involved a one-to-one interview with the self-builders and required extensive footage to be shot, both inside and outside the house. Every visit resulted in a beautifully edited video journal ‘entry’, which could easily be uploaded to Zebra’s client’s website and shared across social media channels. Once the build is complete, one single over-arching film will be produced, to cover the whole story.

  

Meeting the challenges

Maggie continued: “The Knew Production team had extensive experience working on construction projects and understood the challenges of the building site environment. From the moment we briefed Knew Productions, we knew we were in safe hands. From suggestions as to how we could make the footage as engaging as possible, to finding ways to compensate for occasionally challenging weather conditions, Richard and his team of camera operators have been fantastic. Even with the added challenge of having to shoot all the video during the months of the pandemic, the interviews took place as planned, with all social distancing protocols adhered to. The crew managed to be in the right place at the right time to capture the most important moments of the build, without getting in the way of the construction or causing any inconvenience on site.
